Perspective on time and reading.

“Over the course of four years I made time to read all of the Harry Potter books out loud to my daughters. If I can do that and run for president, then you can find time to read to your kids.”

  1. There are always over-achievers amongst us…

But seriously, perhaps this is an imperative that has found the right time, place and perhaps conduit.

About four years ago, during Australia’s 2004 federal election campaign, then Australian Labor Party leader Mark Latham highlighted the importance of parents reading to their children as a campaign issue and policy platform at that election – and he was ridiculed.

The weird thing is, there had already been much attention and even agreement on the importance of parents reading to their children. The media just couldn’t take it as a serious political, electoral issue. And of course, neither would the conservatives who were in power…

And I guess neither did the electorate. Latham’s ALP lost badly.
