BibliOdyssey has a post today with some rare illustrations – some just sketches, others complete – from the mind of Beatrix Potter. I especially like the Christmas ones.
For a look at a darker, inexplicably victim-blaming and innocence-shredding Potter story, have a look at my words of disgust re: Jemima Puddle-Duck. (I get a bit frothy at the mouth toward the end.) “Words of disgust” fits better than “review,” as it’s nearly all plot summary, but that’s all that is needed in this case. While I agree wholeheartedly with White about children’s literature – as true today as it was then – this would not qualify as a good example of what he complained was missing. Disappointing, as the Rabbit stories are nice. Jemima Puddle-Duck: not nice.
