For those readers of Murakami’s After Dark, there is an interesting short story, entitled Sweetheart Sorrow, in the current New Yorker Summer Fiction issue by David Hoon Kim. It involves, among many things, a narrator of Japanese descent who grew up in Denmark but while in Paris has a relationship with a Japanese girl who has a withdrawal mechanism of locking herself in a room and then refusing to come out…
