The Telling Room presents:

The Story House Project

The Telling Room presents a night to hear and read the deeply compelling stories of 15 teenagers’ journeys to America: true stories of violence and dislocation, love and betrayal, courage and redemption. These stories, crafted with the help of 12 accomplished local writers, tell about the students’ exile from their homelands, their journey to America and their struggle to make a life here in Portland.

In collaboration with the Maine College of Art’s "Art for Social Change" course, these students have helped design and build multimedia "story houses" to provide an intimate space to hear, see, and experience these moving stories. This night is also a chance to see the engaging photography show Winky Lewis has created from her documentation of the year-long project.

There is a $5 suggested donation at the door, and an anthology of the stories will be available for $5. The exhibit will be on display from May 8th-11th. For more information, check out their shiny new website at (via)

  1. Hey, I can’t find an email address, so I’ll just post here — just found your site from the Craigslist post, and wanted to let you know I’m really enjoying it. Nice to see another literary type in Maine.
